Ships too large to enter the Port of Cairns anchor to the north of the city at Yorkeys Knob, an unusual name for such a beautiful location, but there is like most names, a story behind it.
It was named after a local fisherman called 'Yorkey' who lived on the rocky hill ('knob') adjacent to Half Moon Beach in the 1880's, the story of how Yorkeys Knob came to be is one that stirs the imagination.
Passengers come ashore at Yorkeys Knob Marina where there has recently been a significant upgrade to the marina services. There are regular bus services into the main city centre of Cairns which is 19 kilometers to the south. You should allow 25 to 30 minutes for the transfers direct by taxi or charter coach or if you want to use public transport then you will need to allow 75 minutes, and you will need buses 110, 111 or 112 on the TRANS LINK service, changing at Smithfield. A short walk at either end to and from the bus stops.
On the great beaches you will always be able to find your own piece of paradise on our large expanse of golden palm-fringed beach. The main patrolled beach offers the protection of stinger nets in the summer season.
The beachfront at Yorkeys Knob beach is also a world-class kite-surfing destination (rated one of the top 10 in the world) and the prevailing SE trade winds from April to November makes Yorkeys the focal point of the local and national kite-surfing community.
There is a major shopping centre just 10 minutes away, the Smithfield Shopping Centre which has over 60 speciality stores, medical centre, banks.
How far is it to Cairns?
The distance is about 18 kilometers and 20-25 minutes by car. There are buses and shuttles available.
